Today I am feeling DONE with the Bay Area and all the money and the competitiveness and the kids already in the rat race.
I want a nice back yard and a cul de saq where the kids can run around.
I want my husband to have a job where he doesn't have to work 24-7.
I want to live in a place where no one even knows what the hottest "it" bag is.
Lately I've just been feeling like all I want is to exhale.

Girl, come to the South. You can have all those things. Life moves a lot slower here.
Hang in there!
ju - what about the liberal/progressive part? any chance of that in the south?
Well, there are blocks of progressives, but mainly more conservative. That is one thing that is difficult for me. BUT, I have seen it start to change in the 20 years I've been here.
I also highly recommend the midwest. I grew up in Missouri, and loved it. St. Louis is a great city.
But, the South is really home now. A bigger city, say something like Charlotte might be a good fit? Or, a really cool spot is Asheville, NC.
I love me some Charleston. Come take a look around! I'll give you the tour.
Move back to SF! At least A's commute would be shorter. Sure, there's lots of $$ here, but we're a bit insulated from the rat race w/ Q in public school. No huge yards or cul de sacs, but tons of fabulous parks, libraries, and museums. Oh, yeah, and S's long lost twin lives here! :-) And, of course, I have ONLY your best interests in mind here. Nothing to do w/ the fact that I'd love to have you closer to me!
Oh, I'm with you...I'm in San Diego. It's nowhere near as bad as San Fran, I don't think. I'd have to agree with JuJu - go south. I'm from Florida and I miss it dearly. CA is so ridiculously expensive. Ugh.
